The Magic in Lean Startup is Hypothesis Testing

I’ve been running Lean LaunchPad programs for a couple of years now, and all along, I’ve thought that the number of customer development interviews that a team does is a good indicator of how successful they’ll be. And when we measure interview numbers against progress on the Investment Readiness Levels , the correlation is very strongly positive.

Making innovation less difficult and less expensive

Jeffrey Phillips

I've made a simple drawing to illustrate what many of you already know. Too many people in the innovation arena are apt to talk about ideas, which are relatively easy to get, but fail to consider the effort involved to move from an idea stage to an innovation stage. I've often compared this to the amount of force it takes to get a rocket into orbit.

This air cooling system for the slums uses plastic bottles and requires no electricity

Idea to Value

In Bangladesh, 70% of the population live without regular electricity, often in tin-sided huts which can reach 45°C inside. This simple solution is made from recycled materials and can cool a room by 5 degrees, making life much more bearable. It works by the same underlying physics as a refrigerator, where pushing a gas through a small hole causes a cooling effect once the gas expands again on the other side.

Being a good innovator is not enough

When I was younger, working for Texas Instruments, Intel seemed to constantly reinvent the computing industry.

I keep arguing we all need to seek out innovation alignment

All too often strategy is not influencing the behaviours and outcomes around innovation, it is simply allowing them to be left to chance. Innovation is being ‘pushed down’ the organisation for others to interpret and offer their answers. They execute to their own understanding and often the innovations end up as not strategically aligned. That is plainly wrong, not knowing the strategic objectives it is one of the principle causes of innovation failure and requires fixing.
