True Leadership entails building empathy for those you are entrusted to help. I see headlines every day about failed innovation efforts. 88% of Fortune 500 firms that were alive in 1955 are gone or diminished, having missed their chance to innovate. Only 8 out of 100 startups survive past 10 years. Did you know Macy’s came up with home shopping channel QVC in 1980?
Discover the challenges faced by many of the innovation managers we spoke to at Innovation Roundtable Summit 2019, and find tips for overcoming them. The post 7 challenges innovation managers face in 2020 appeared first on Board of Innovation.
We’re all familiar with the old phrase “what got me here, is not going to get me there”, and this is even more important when things are moving so fast and changing so quickly. The things that got us to success yesterday, or even today, aren’t working anymore, or they’re not working as well as.
It's about that time of year where we begin to look back, to think about what we've accomplished and what lies ahead. Knowing that the end of the year is in sight, and the holidays are almost upon us, we anticipate work slowing down, and perhaps for just a few days we can actually think - really think - about what's going to happen in 2020. I've had the good fortune over the last six weeks to reach out and talk to a significant number of my colleagues, friends and some new acquaintances in the i

Successful ideas must go through the innovation life cycle. Resting is for retirement. As long as you’re in business, you need to be on top of your game, and innovation is a big part of getting to the front of the pack (and staying there). Having a separate innovation department is a relatively new concept, and it’s gaining favor. Every big company always has a lot going on, and for this reason, innovation can sometimes be relegated to the bottom of the task list.
In the 1990s John Koza, a professor at Stanford University carried out a series of experiments involving new ways to create electrical circuits. He designed a programme which created thousands of random circuit designs. These were measured against desired outcomes. Most were terrible and were eliminated. Those closest to a solution were combined and rerun.

We are all good at reacting and responding – a knee-jerk reaction, so to speak. Even organizations large and small have learned how to be lean and agile while executing a strategy at a high level. But despite these skills, General Motors still declared bankruptcy, Blockbuster closed its last store, and the record industry succumbed to Spotify, all despite their leaders and workers being responsive and agile and executing well.

Last month, I was honoured to sit on the Idea Drop Innovation Breakfast panel, alongside the talented and successful Zoe Bailey, Wendy Walton and Louise Shenton, to discuss the importance of gender diversity and its impact on innovation. Have you ever witnessed something beautiful and frightening at the same time? I had the opportunity to see something like that last week on my visit to Pompeii in Italy. While I walked through the ruins imagining how beautiful and advanced the community back then was, I could not erase the veneer of truth over those ruins; one of the most advanced cities was erased from the earth by a natural disaster.

In 2010, I had an idea for a new product for the company I worked for. I had put together a business plan and presented it to the company’s CEO. A week later I presented it to the board of directors. My presentation was very well received, and the directors described the product as very.

Raise your hand if you were alive on November 22, 1963. I recently posed this question to a conference room of 30 senior executives and board members. The generation now entering the workforce will never use a payphone, never write a check, never get off the couch to turn the channel, and never look up movie times in the newspaper. Things that all seemed normal and permanent to those of us over 40 are simply not things anymore. The digital age is upon us, and we can make calls from anywhere, send money with a click, click through hundreds of channels, and buy movie tickets with an app.
