Innovation is difficult because it requires novelty. And novelty is difficult because it’s different than last time. And different than last time is difficult because you’ve got to put yourself out there. And putting yourself out there is difficult because no one wants to be judged negatively. Success, no matter how small, reinforces what was.
People like to joke that the only things that never change are death and taxes, but that's just not true. If it were, you would never hear things like, "That's just the way we've always done it," and, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Not changing, even if the current situation is rife with workarounds and rework, is more comfortable and less risky than trying something new, so it's no wonder that people push back when leaders try to shake things up.

What Would Strategic Planning For Santa Claus Look Like? As we come to the close of the year, I've been reflecting on all the different clients we’ve worked with on strategy. There's been such a variety of industries, markets and organizations - and it got me thinking about how strategic planning is at the core of most things we do. Even Christmas. So in the holiday spirit I've had a little fun and did some strategic planning for Santa Claus.
Brainstorms are important and an easy way to get everybody together to collaborate, discuss, debate, and ultimately, innovate. But sometimes, you come out of them feeling as if you didn’t get the ideas that you needed, or that the same ideas were being rehashed, or that it was a complete waste of time. So, why.
Idea management is about working together.?. It’s a challenge every leader must overcome: the suggestion box. In 1900, most people lived much like their ancestors had for millennia. They lived and worked on farms, using animal power and hand tools to augment their own abilities. They inhabited small communities and rarely, if ever, travelled far from home. They engaged in small scale violence and lived short, hard lives. That would all.
CEOs and their innovation teams have such power, but focus and direction are necessary to unleash it.?. Innovate or be left behind — that’s the reality of the business world. Jessica Day, vice president of IdeaScale, the largest cloud-based innovation software platform in the world, has some advice about how to find and cultivate intrapreneurs.
I’m not sure about you, but at this time of the year, I don’t feel like tackling any major new projects. There seem to be a ton of interruptions, people are in and out of the office, and it is just harder to focus with holiday thoughts on the brain. On the other hand, these next couple of weeks present an opportunity to do a few self-contained improvement projects that can tee up 2020 and help you enjoy the holidays knowing you’re ready to rock the new year.
