As visual creatures, we rely on graphic representations to simplify and communicate complex data. Over the past decades, processing information has become more challenging than ever, yet decision-making relies heavily on understanding and communicating this data. So, the visual communication responsibilities also extended from specialized roles to managers and professionals who need this additional skill to make sense of their work.
In an earlier age, organizations were far more hierarchical. Power rested at the top. Information flowed up, orders went down, work got done and people got paid. Incentives seemed to work. You could pay more and get more. Yet in today's marketplace, that’s no longer tenable because the work we need done is increasingly non-routine. That means we need people to do more than merely carry out tasks, they need to put all of their passion and creativity into their work to perform at a high-level.

When faced with a significantly challenging innovation project, is it worth doing the easy tasks first to get some quick wins on the board, or should you tackle the hardest part of the project? I have been listening to some podcasts with Annie Duke recently, who has a great new book out about when it is the right time to quit. One of the metaphors she uses is trying to teach a monkey to juggle flaming torches while standing on a pedestal.

Then apply it to your innovation-building activity as a framework for innovation.
