Lean is Dead. Long Live Lean! Twenty four years ago, James Womack, Daniel Jones, and Daniel Roos introduced our world to a modern understanding of the concept of Lean Production. Lean Production was, and still is, a profoundly powerful management philosophy for the mass production of uniform goods.
Have you noticed that the Lean Startup concept has been getting more and more attention lately? In the one camp, we have the Lean Startup model, which directs us to learn fast by failing fast via a Minimum Viable Product, or MVP. In a nutshell⃜ low risk lends itself to Lean Startup; high risk requires Right Startup.
It also allows the organization to experiment in a lean and agile manner. In this regard, they operate one or more parts of the organization like a startup studio – trying out all sorts of new ideas live, in market, to see which ones the market is ready for , which it will never be ready for, and which need more time yet.
Professionally, they have been exposed to ideas like Lean Startup, Design Thinking, Experiential Learning, and Engagement Marketing. They are, in effect, the product of an entirely new world of thinking; one both more digital and connected and in some ways more human and pragmatic.
Customer co-creation is a powerful emerging method for lean and frugal innovation. This is not even to mention customer-generated content platforms like YouTube, Medium, and SlideShare.
In our experience, this three–part model — Front End / Mid Zone / Back End — is a much better representation of the state of Innovation Management today, and a much better reflection of the Lean Startup model and how that model is being used inside of large organizations.
And we have to accept the fact that a byproduct of our pursuing lean, agile, capital-efficient experimentation like this in our Horizon 2 and 3 work will be a certain amount of technical and organizational debt that we'll have to work out later on, just as with any other new endeavor.
This is work that simply cannot take place within the normal organization, as those staff have neither the time, nor the resources, nor the support, nor in many cases the skills, to drive this sort of ill-defined forward-looking future space.
This is the land of Operational Excellence, using classical methods like Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma. Execution is focused exclusively on executing today's foundations of value, and doing so with the utmost of efficiency. This is so as to extract the maximum possible value from them.
This world, too, has made its contributions – the startup enterprise, Eric Ries' lean startup model, the minimal viable product (MVP), and – very importantly – a massive ecosystem of startup communities around the world all supporting and rooting for one another.
